In the 1960 summer Olympics, New Zealand suddenly came into the spotlight due to three runners who made it to the medal stand. Peter Snell won a gold medal in the 1,500 meter run, Murray Halberg won a gold medal in the 5,000 meter run, and Barry Magee won a bronze medal in the Marathon. Each runner had one thing in common, they were all coached by Arthur Lydiard.
For more than a decade after the 1960 Olympics, New Zealand always seemed to have gold medalists, world record holders, and elite runners in middle and long distance running. They were either coached by Arthur Lydiard, or they used his training methods to succeed. Perhaps people from New Zealand had a special gift for running that the rest of the world lacked. If this were true, why was it not apparent until 1960? The simple answer is Arthur Lydiard’s training methods.
Champions on Every Street
Arthur is known for saying, “There are champions everywhere. Every street’s got them. All we need to do is train them properly.” What if Christian leaders believed that there were champions everywhere, that every street has them, they just need to be trained properly? What if people believed this about themselves? That though they are common people that you would find on any street, they believed that all they needed for themselves was proper training? Of course I’m not talking about training Christians to be champion runners, I’m talking about training Christians to be champions for God.
There is a reason that the disciples were able to minister in the powerful way that they ministered, they had great training and a great teacher who happened to be Jesus. Do you want to train someone to be a champion of God? If so, learn the best methods for training them, and disciple them to Christ-like maturity. Do you want to train to be a champion for God? Then find someone who knows how to train you to be a champion for God and let them train you. If you can’t find anyone to train you, John 14:26 says, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
God is looking for men and women who can be mightily used by him; not the one in a million or billion rarity who happens to be endowed with special ability, but those on every street who are willing to be trained by him. If you are willing, you can be a champion.
